‘The Apache Wars: On The Border With Crook And An Apache Campaign In The Sierra Madre.‘ 2 Volumes In 1, by John G. Bourke is an inside look at the wars with the Apache Indians in the Southwest during the 1870s and 1880s. John Gregory Bourke (1843-1896), was a captain in the Cavalry of the United States Army and a prolific diarist and post-Civil War author. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions while a cavalryman in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He served as an aide to General George Crook in the Apache Wars from 1870 to 1886. As Crook‘s aide, Bourke had the opportunity to witness every facet of life in the Old West----the battles, wildlife, the internal squabbling among the military, the Indian Agency, settlers, and Native Americans. During these decades, Bourke kept a diary in sequential journals, documenting his observations in the West. He used these notes as the basis for his later monographs and writings including this first volume of this 2-volume ebook book; ‘On The Border With Crook.‘ The second volume, ‘An Apache Campaign in the Sierra Madre‘ also contains, a short biography of Bourke with a bibliography of his other writings. John Bourke wrote several books about the American Old West, including ethnologies of its indigenous peoples. In a preface to one of Bourke‘s Books, Viennese psychiatrist Sigmund Freud. Freud wrote: ‘He was recognized in his own time for his ethnological writings on various indigenous peoples of the North American Southwest, particularly Apachean groups.‘ Bourke, a keen observer and student of Indian cultures, as well as the flora & fauna of the Western posts at which he was stationed, gives a complete eyewitness account of these struggles with the Apache Tribe, including the celebrated operations involving the famous Apache chief, Geronimo. The combined volumes contain over 226,100+ words and approximately 753+ pages at 300 words per page, as well as all the illustrations in the originally published works. NOTE: This book has been scanned then OCR (Optical Character Recognition) has been applied to turn the scanned page images back into editable text. Then every effort has been made to correct typos, spelling, and to eliminate stray marks picked up by the OCR program. The original and/or extra period images, if any, were then placed in the appropriate place and, finally, the file was formatted for the e-book criteria of the site. This means that the text CAN be re-sized, searches performed, & bookmarks added, unlike some other e-books that are only scanned---errors, stray marks, and all.
