The Elopement

‘It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.’ 1820; and the marriage between wealthy widower Sir Edward Knatchbull and Jane Austen’s handsome, dutiful neice Fanny Knight is widely praised as being the most excellent match in the county. As Sir Edward’s wife, Fanny is expected to apply herself to the raising of his five children with the same dedication she has shown towards her siblings at Godmersham Park.
