The nature of tyranny and the downfall of enslavement

"The Nature of Despotism and the Downfall of Enslavement" by Abd al-Rahman al-Kawakibi, one of the founders of Arab nationalist thought, addresses the forms of despotism he saw as manifested in political tyranny. He explores despotism and its condemnation in religion, its relationship to knowledge and the tyranny of ignorance over it, and how nations achieve glory when they can rid themselves of it. Regarding wealth, he argued that the accumulation of excessive riches in the hands of specific groups breeds despotism. He also addresses despotism from an ethical perspective, emphasizing that it contradicts morality and sound human nature, and that proper education must cultivate individuals free from this behavior, which destroys individuals and societies and hinders the intellectual and social progress of nations. During the second half of the nineteenth century, the Arab nations suffered from weakness and humiliation, a period in which the colonizer seized their freedoms. Abd al-Rahman al-Kawakibi lived during this period, which prompted him to write on this matter and to offer solutions to get rid of tyranny, such as constitutional consultation, which he saw as a cure for this ailment.
