"Humanity progressed in beliefs just as it progressed in science and industry... Its earliest beliefs were comparable to its earliest life, and so were its sciences and industries. The beginnings of science and industry were no more advanced than the beginnings of religions and worship, nor were the elements of truth in one more abundant than in the other. In this book, Al-Aqqad traces the origins of the divine belief, from the time humankind first worshipped a deity until it came to know the One God and was guided to the purity of monotheism. The author begins with the origins of belief among primitive peoples, then summarizes the beliefs of peoples who advanced in the ages of civilization, followed by the beliefs of those who believe in the revealed scriptures. He then presents the doctrines of earlier philosophers, the doctrines of later philosophers, and concludes with the doctrines of modern philosophy and the perspective of modern science on the question of faith. His aim was to focus solely on the divine belief. He did not intend to detail the rituals of religions or categorize the fundamentals of worship, because this subject, even when confined to its scope, is too vast to be fully explored in a single book."
