Each act captures a distinct historical era, depicting individuals from all walks of life in Beijing-scholars, officials, merchants, laborers, and more-frequenting this iconic teahouse. The play unfolds like a grand historical panorama, vividly illustrating the inevitable collapse of old China and the inevitability of the birth of a new China. With nearly 50 characters appearing throughout the script-aside from the teahouse owner, they include Manchu bannermen living on imperial stipends, industrial capitalists, eunuchs from the Qing court, foreign missionaries, impoverished peasants, as well as spies, thugs, police officers, ruffians, fortune-tellers, and others-the play features a multitude of vividly sketched personalities. Each character is so distinct that one can "recognize them by their voice," and "a few lines are enough to outline the contours of their image." Through the desperate efforts of Wang Lifa, the teahouse owner, to keep Yu Tai Teahouse afloat, the work depicts his shrewdness, adaptability, and tireless dedication, yet ultimately his inability to stave off decline.
